I go unarmed most of the time and my damage is very good, but some enemies are immune to crush or have high DR against it so I carry a backup weapon.

Why Monk? You can build them to be real bruisers, throwing out high DPS with the right build. I'm going to through this out there because I love the class, but Monk. Tl dr-Paladin, Fighter, Barbarian for melee-types. Fighters and Barbarians are pretty good choices because they're fairly straight-forward but highly customizable, and get lots of abilities.Priests are mega-weak in the beginning though! Priest as the main character gains bonuses if you are aligned with the ideals of your faith. Druids benefit from shape-shift which is a nice "whoops!" button, and allows versatility as an off-tank.

"Mass spell" classes (Priest and druid) are nice if you don't mind knowing what every spell does.Rangers deal a lot of damage, but can get kinda boring like paladins (use an ability twice in an encounter, then just point and click the rest of the encounter).Learned spell castery-types can be tricky to optimize without guides (Chanter, Cipher, Wizard).Ciphers deal lots of damage, but are glass cannons, so take some getting used to.Chanters and Monks are fairly unique, so if you're a quick learner they can be amazing. This question mostly comes down to playstyle, as well as familiarity to the system. Normal might be "too easy" but you can also make your character any way you want and probably still have no problem beating the game, so there's that! I started on Hard on my first run-through, since I've played similar games and did very well. Then in my next playthrough I go a different route. I like helping people and buffing my party as I progress through the story. OP: I like Paladin because their key ability scores line up well with conversation abilities (Resolve, Intelligence, and to a lesser extent Perception and Lore), and their major ability gets stronger the closer to your ideals you stick to! That, and I enjoy the archetype. They also have an extremely passive playstyle in combat, which can get a little dull.
